George and Pat

In 2009 George
Young was
appointed to the
Board of the
Canadian Tourism
Commission by
the Federal
Government and
has the
knowledge about
current trends
in global
travel.
As emerging
economies,
China, India,
Brazil, and
Mexico, and
middle class
income earners
come into new
wealth, we need
to be personal
to entice new
tourist money in
Huntsville and
Muskoka.
Huntsville is
fortunate to
have an
individual like
George who can
help give
direction and
counsel on
tourism
opportunities to
the CTC.
George is
working hard to
increase tourism
and diversify
our economy
through
initiatives that
support a
creative
economy.

BIOGRAPHY
I was born in Huntsville in
May 1944. I am a fourth
generation Young after my
great-grandfather, George Young,
came here in the late 1800’s,
taking one of the now famous
land grants to farm the area. My
father Percy was a former clerk
of Brunel Township and later the
Town of Huntsville after
amalgamation.
At the age of 16 I decided to
pursue a radio career which
lasted 33 years. 28 of those
years were with the CBC as a
sports broadcaster. I reported
on 7 Olympics, four world cup
soccer championships, the 1972
Canada/ Russia hockey series,
World University Games, Pan Am
Games and a host of other
events. I was also a member of
the International Olympic
Committee’s Radio and TV
commission in the mid 1980’s.
In 1998 we returned to
Huntsville and I got involved in
local politics as a member of
the Millennium Committee. My
first of three terms followed in
2000; two as representative of
Brunel Ward and my last term as
District Councilor.
In 2009 I was appointed by
Federal Industry Minister, Tony
Clement, to the Canadian Tourism
Commission board for a four year
term.
In 2010 I was the recipient of
the President’s award from the
Canadian Sports Tourism
Association for contributions
made in Huntsville, Muskoka and
provincial and federal levels.
I have four children; a son and
three daughters. My wife, Pat,
has a son and a daughter.
Between us we have 17
grandchildren, including three
sets of twins.
